About the name
In the Bible, Jacob is the patriarch, the grandson of Abraham. It comes from the Hebrew yaʿăqōḇ, linked to the word for 'heel of the foot', and the meaning is given as possibly 'holding the heel'. James and the Hebrew Yaakov are both doubles of it.

It has two syllables, JAY-kub. Jake is the everyday short form, and related forms include Jakob, Jacques, Jay and Yakub.
Jacob ranks well in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, and appears in Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch lists further down. Canadian records show its peak at the very end of the 1990s. Since then it has declined in most of the places that record it, so it now feels like a familiar name of the recent past rather than a current favourite.

Meaning
“possibly holding the heel” (hedged in the source)
From Middle English Iacob, from Late Latin Iācōbus, from Ancient Greek Ἰάκωβος (Iákōbos), from Biblical Hebrew יַעֲקֹב (yaʿăqōḇ, literally “May He Heel”), from the third-person singular masculine imperfective form of the Semitic verb "to heel" (with various meanings), in turn from עָקֵב (ʿāqēḇ, “heel of the foot”). Doublet of James, Yaakov, and Yakub.
