About the name
In Spanish, Matthew becomes Mateo. It comes from Latin Matthaeus and Greek Matthaîos, and goes back to the Hebrew mattiṯyāhū, 'gift of the Lord'. It is a cousin of Matías.

Said mah-TAY-oh, it has three syllables with the stress in the middle, giving it a warm, lilting rhythm. The accented spelling Matéo is also used, and relatives include Matthew, Matteo, Mateusz, Mathieu and Matti.
Mateo is the leading boys' name in Spain and close to the top in Argentina and Catalonia. In English-speaking lists it is more moderate, appearing in British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario. French records put its peak in the mid-2000s, but it is rising in most of the places that record it.
Borrowed from Latin Matthaeus, from Ancient Greek Ματθαῖος (Matthaîos), from Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (mattiṯyāhū, literally “gift of the Lord”). Cognate with Spanish Matías and Matatías.
